Launched in 2016, the first edition of the Myanmar-Netherlands Water Challenge laid the foundation for SMART DELTA solutions, focusing on the key functions and stakeholders of the delta. Through a rich mix of activities, including workshops, guest lectures, field trips and role playing, more than 100 participants from nine universities experienced first-hand the importance of multi-stakeholder, integrated delta development.

The water challenge offered an exciting program of activities, running from January until May 2016:
1. Official Launch
The Myanmar-Netherlands Water Challenge was officially launched during a celebratory event at Yangong Technological University on 18 January 2016. Representatives from the Myanmar and Netherlands government, universities, companies as well as students joined the event.

Campus Program
With the team of international experts, two half-day, on-campus programs were organised to introduce the water challenge program to students and give them an interesting introduction to the Smart Delta theme. The program offered opportunities for students to actively participate and meet with the experts. The first session was hosted at YTU on 29 February, the second session at MMU on 1 March.

Delta Academy
Highlight of the water challenge program was the Delta Academy, an intensive 3-day program - taking place from 10-12 May 2016 - that offered selected students a rich mix of activities, including field trips, workshops, team assignments, networking events and a Grand Final on-stage with national television coverage! Forty selected students and young professionals were invited to participate.
